Early this morning at approximately 1:30 AM, Sacramento County Sheriff's North Patrol Deputies responded to a bar on the 4500 block of Auburn Boulevard to the report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered an unresponsive adult male victim lying on the ground in the parking lot underneath a vehicle that appeared to have run him over. The driver of that vehicle, hereby referred to as John Doe, remained at the scene as Deputies arrived.
Sheriff's Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene, collected evidence, and interviewed witnesses, including Doe. Detectives learned that the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Oscar Alferez Jr., started a fight with Doe inside the bar, which continued outside into the parking lot. Several individuals were involved in the fight outside, including Alferez's father, 51-year-old Oscar Alferez Sr., who brandished a handgun and threatened Doe with it. During the fight, Alferez Sr. was knocked to the ground and disarmed. Alferez Jr. picked up the gun, as Doe got in his vehicle and attempted to drive away. Alferez shot at Doe several times and struck his car, causing Doe to run over Alferez Sr. as he was still on the ground. Alferez Sr. died at the scene.
Homicide Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Murder and Attempted Murder for Alferez Jr. Sheriff's Major Crimes Detectives located and arrested him later in the evening. He was transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail and is currently ineligible for bail. Alferez Jr. is scheduled to appear in court on January 28.
