A high-level meeting, convened under the directive of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, was held today under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Water Resources, Muhammad Mueen Watto, to discuss strategies for enhancing Pakistan's water storage capacity and mitigating future flood risks.
The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadiq Malik, Chairman WAPDA, Chairman NDMA and Provincial Secretaries from all provinces including GB and AJK. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to working collectively for sustainable water management and resilience against climate-induced disasters.
Chairman WAPDA briefed the meeting on ongoing dam construction projects and emphasized the urgent need to accelerate efforts to expand the country's water storage infrastructure. He highlighted that timely completion of these projects is crucial for flood control and securing water resources for future generations.
The participants also discussed alternative and complementary flood control measures, including reforestation, watershed management, construction of levees and embankments, improvement of drainage systems, and adoption of modern flood forecasting and early warning systems. Special focus was given to addressing urban flooding, with proposals for upgrading city drainage infrastructure, regulating urban expansion in flood-prone areas, and implementing smart water management practices to minimize damage in metropolitan centers.
Federal Minister Muhammad Mueen Watto stressed that effective water management is directly linked to food security, energy security, and human security. He highlighted the Prime Minister's directive for the Federal Government and all Federating Units to jointly develop short-, medium-, and long-term plans to address recurring floods, climate change challenges, and urban flooding through enhanced water storage infrastructure and comprehensive flood management solutions.
