In a community hall in Sydney's Northern Beaches, a group of 22 people are dressed in green, red and tinsel for a Christmas in July choir performance. Letters strung along the front of the stage spell out the words: 'The Northern Beaches Mobile Choir.'
'Love is in the Air' and 'Let it Be' fill the room as the audience wave their arms and tap their feet. This concert was the result of a long-held dream by Marc to create an inclusive community space where people with and without disability can come together through song.
"Music has a way of bringing people together," Marc shares. "I want this choir to show the wider community that people with disabilities can live full, vibrant lives."
For the people in the Northern Beaches Mobile Choir, it has become a place for them to express themselves, build confidence and enjoy being part of a community.
Marc's love of music was nurtured by his mother, a musician who entertained on an Air Force ship. Every day after school, she would sit Marc beside the piano and play for an hour.
"That's where I got the music," Marc says. "It's been my dream for a long time to start a choir because I wanted to keep my mum's dream alive."
This dream became reality through the support of a $5,000 Hireup Impact Grant. For Marc, the grant was the essential foundation.
"The Hireup Impact Grant gave me the power to start up and to buy the equipment we all needed," he explains. "If it wasn't for the grant, I would have no dream."
Today, that dream has turned into what Marc calls a "choir family," where members work together and support one another.
Directing that first concert was an experience Marc will remember for a long time, but he isn't stopping there.
Looking ahead, Marc has big hopes for what comes next. He envisions taking the Northern Beaches Mobile Choir into local schools and aged care facilities, hosting an end of year performance and perhaps, one day, taking the choir on the road to show the world that everyone can have a voice.
