Jochen Reiser, MD, PhD, president of The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and CEO of the UTMB Health System, has been selected as Business Person of the Year by The Galveston County Daily News.
The Business Person of the Year is chosen by the Daily News editorial team as part of its overall Citizen of the Year program. Rather than a traditional nomination pool, the selection is based on individuals whose impact on the business community and the region has stood out over the past year.
"Dr. Reiser's leadership at The University of Texas Medical Branch has had a meaningful impact not only on healthcare in Galveston County, but also on the region's economic strength and future growth," Daily News Publisher Michelle Robinson said. "His work reflects a balance of innovation, community partnership, and long-term vision, which are all qualities we look to recognize with this award. His ability to lead a major institution while maintaining a strong connection to the community made him a clear choice."
Since joining UTMB in August 2023, Reiser has led significant transformation across the institution, advancing a bold, integrated vision that unites education, research, clinical care, and innovation.

Reiser, an internationally recognized physician-scientist, is known for pioneering research in kidney disease, with discoveries that have advanced new treatment pathways and clinical applications. He is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina - one of the world's oldest academies - reflecting the global impact of his work.
Before joining UTMB, he held leadership and faculty roles at Rush University Medical Center, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Harvard Medical School.
