VCU remembering Adam Oakes, hosting hazing prevention workshop on Feb. 24

Virginia Commonwealth University and the family of Adam Oakes will host a workshop next week in honor of Adam and to educate students about the dangers of hazing. Adam's Day of Remembrance will take place Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the University Student Commons, 907 Floyd Ave. in Richmond.

Adam was a 19-year-old freshman at VCU when he died on Feb. 27, 2021, due to an alcohol-related hazing incident at an off-campus fraternity event. Subsequently, VCU permanently banned the fraternity as a registered student organization.

VCU and the Oakes family are committed to fostering a safer and healthier community for all students. The Adam's Day of Remembrance workshop is an important part of those efforts.

Members of the Oakes family and VCU Hazing Prevention are available to speak to members of the media from 3:30 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 24 in the Alumni Board Room inside of the Commons. The family will share remembrances of Adam and discuss ongoing hazing prevention efforts by the Love Like Adam Foundation and VCU Hazing Prevention.

A private reception and a workshop that follow are not open to the media.

On Saturday, Feb. 28, Adam will be remembered during VCU's Homecoming basketball game against Fordham. His family will be introduced during the game.
