Emmer, Minnesota Republican Delegation Demand Increased Election Security

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Tom Emmer (MN-06) led Minnesota's Republican congressional delegation in sending a letter to Governor Tim Walz and Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon regarding the recent indictments of noncitizens voting in Minnesota's elections and demanding election security.

"These recent indictments are proof of what commonsense Minnesotans have known all along: Minnesota's elections are rife with fraud," said Congressman Emmer. "One noncitizen voting is one too many. It's simple: only citizens should vote in our elections. I won't stop fighting for safe, secure elections. It's time Governor Walz and Secretary Simon do the same."

Background

On September 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that a federal grand jury indicted ten individuals for voter fraud, charging them with false claims of citizenship to vote in Minnesota's elections, including the 2022 and 2024 general elections and the 2026 primary election. All of this follows over a year of requests from the DOJ for information on Minnesota's voter lists and compliance with federal election guidelines.

Minnesota's election laws have created an ideal environment for voter fraud. In the last several years, Congressman Emmer and his Minnesota Republican colleagues took the following actions to sound the alarm on Minnesota's election security weaknesses:

  • On January 31, 2023, Congressman Emmer joined Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil and the Minnesota Republican delegation in sending a letter to Secretary Simon asking how his office plans to investigate claims that DACA recipients and other noncitizens were voting in Minnesota's elections.
  • On October 2, 2024, Congressman Emmer again joined Chairman Steil in sending a letter to Secretary Simon and Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson to voice their concerns over reports that noncitizens in Minnesota have been receiving ballots.
  • On November 20, 2024, Congressman Emmer and the Minnesota Republican delegation sent a letter to Secretary Simon demanding that his office take action to restore trust in Minnesota's election process.
  • On December 23, 2024, Congressman Emmer and the Minnesota Republican delegation sent a letter to Secretary Simon demanding transparency after it was confirmed that 20 ballots were likely illegally disposed of in Shakopee's 10th precinct.
