The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) has named Susan Chubinskaya, PhD, MS, its new Senior Vice President, Provost, and Chief Academic Officer.

Chubinskaya has served as Interim Provost since earlier this year, and joined UTMB in February 2024 as Vice President and Executive Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development.

An internationally recognized expert in regenerative medicine and musculoskeletal biology, Chubinskaya brings more than 30 years of distinguished experience in academic leadership, faculty development, and research innovation.

In her expanded role, she will serve as UTMB's Chief Academic Officer, advancing academic excellence throughout the institution's five schools-the John Sealy School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Health Professions, School of Public and Population Health and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Additionally, she will focus her efforts on the development of new academic programs to increase student enrollment and meet the current and future workforce needs for the state of Texas. She will also continue her work to strengthen faculty and student mentoring, wellness, and leadership development programs.

"Dr. Chubinskaya is an inspiring leader whose vision, integrity, and commitment to academic excellence have already strengthened our institution," said Dr. Jochen Reiser, President of UTMB and CEO of the UTMB Health System. "Her deep experience in faculty affairs and her passion for supporting the next generation of scientists, educators, and clinicians make her exceptionally well-suited to guide UTMB's academic mission forward. We are fortunate to have her leadership at this pivotal moment in our history."

Prior to joining UTMB, Chubinskaya spent more than three decades at Rush University in Chicago, advancing through multiple academic leadership roles and spearheading initiatives that enhanced faculty productivity, expanded scholarly engagement, and increased opportunities for leadership advancement. She is a past president of the Orthopaedic Research Society and has served on numerous national study sections and review panels, including the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs.

A graduate of the prestigious Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program at Drexel University and a certified executive coach, Chubinskaya has long been a champion of mentorship, professional growth, and inclusive leadership.

"It is an honor to continue serving UTMB in this capacity, and I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me," Chubinskaya said. "UTMB is a remarkable institution with rich history, extraordinary faculty, staff, and learners. I look forward to strengthening the academic foundation that supports their success, fostering innovation across our programs, and advancing our shared mission to educate, discover, and serve."
