The story of Lamar University's College of Engineering begins long before there was a college: with a region transformed by industry and a mission formed by that change.
The story begins with a region marked by industrial change.
When Capt. Anthony F. Lucas struck oil at Spindletop on Jan. 10, 1901, Beaumont changed almost overnight. The Lucas Gusher launched the Texas oil boom, drawing hundreds of companies to Southeast Texas and establishing the region as one of the nation's leading centers for energy, refining and manufacturing. As industry expanded, so did the need for the people who would design its facilities, improve its processes and solve increasingly complex problems.
The region's industrial economy was growing faster than its engineering workforce.
Realizing the need, Texas lawmakers established Lamar State College of Technology in 1951 to educate the engineers, scientists and technologists who would help sustain Southeast Texas' continued growth. During the dedication ceremony, Secretary of the Interior Oscar Chapman described the moment as "propitious," pointing to the nation's shortage of engineers.
"It is institutions like this one," Chapman said, "that must provide the skilled technologists upon which industrial advance so greatly depends."
Seventy-five years later, those words continue to define Lamar University's College of Engineering: a mission grounded in the region's needs and still guiding its work today.
Today, the college is home to nationally recognized academic programs, state-of-the-art research, and one of the highest-return engineering educations in the country. But perhaps its greatest accomplishment is that it has stayed deeply connected to the industries and communities it was created to serve.
Although the College of Engineering officially traces its history to 1951, engineering had been part of Lamar University's identity for decades, laying the basis for what followed.
When South Park Junior College opened in 1923, O.B. Archer served as the institution's lone engineering instructor while also leading the physics department. Resources were modest, but interest was strong. By 1939, one-third of the university's male students were enrolled in engineering courses, indicating the increasing importance of technical education in Southeast Texas.
The timing was no coincidence.
Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, Beaumont and the surrounding region experienced extraordinary industrial growth. Refineries expanded along the Neches River. Chemical manufacturers established operations across Southeast Texas. Ports, pipelines, and transit networks modified the landscape.
Lamar University developed alongside them.
That growth made the establishment of Lamar State College of Technology a direct response to a clear need: the region needed an engineering school designed not simply to educate students, but to support one of the country's most important industrial economies.
Over the next two decades, the college continued to mature.
Each bachelor's degree program earned ABET accreditation between 1958 and 1961, a distinction every engineering program maintains today. Graduate education soon followed with the Master of Engineering Science in 1962, the Master of Engineering in 1968, and LU's first doctoral engineering program in 1970.
Together, those milestones reflected more than scholastic growth. They signaled LU's emergence as a research institution capable of helping shape the future of engineering while continuing to meet the workforce needs of Southeast Texas.
The Lucas Engineering Building, dedicated in 1951 as the university's first engineering facility, honors Capt. Anthony F. Lucas, whose discovery at Spindletop forever changed Southeast Texas. Located just a mile from the first oil field, the building acts as a reminder that Lamar University's engineering story is inseparable from the region's industrial history.
One name tells the story of the college's growth.
Lloyd B. Cherry joined Lamar University as a professor of electrical engineering before serving as director of research, head of the Electrical Engineering Department, and eventually dean of the School of Engineering in 1967.
Cherry guided the college during a period of expansion, helping strengthen graduate education while fostering relationships with the industries surrounding Southeast Texas. His work earned widespread recognition, including the Piper Professor Award for outstanding teaching and the title of Engineer of the Year from the Sabine Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers in 1972. He also served as a consultant for numerous companies throughout the region, bringing hands-on industry experience into the classroom. Today, Cherry Engineering bears his name in recognition of his lasting contributions to Lamar University and the engineering profession.
While the college has grown significantly over the past 75 years, one aspect of its mission has remained remarkably consistent: preparing students through experience. That commitment carries into the classroom and beyond.
Students conduct research in modern laboratories, collaborate on multidisciplinary design projects and gain professional experience via internships and cooperative education with industry partners across Southeast Texas.
To support that work, campus facilities have evolved over time.
The Science and Technology Building, completed in 2017, houses instructional laboratories, research labs, collaborative study spaces and a makerspace where students develop prototypes and test new ideas. The building supports research in areas ranging from advanced materials and manufacturing to environmental engineering, energy systems and emerging technologies.
Beyond the classroom, engineering students continue learning through organizations that mirror the profession itself.
The Student Engineering Council connects students across disciplines, while organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers provide opportunities to compete nationally, attend professional conferences, and network with employers.
Other organizations-including the Society of Women Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers, Engineers Without Borders, Robotic Cardinals, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ,Alpha Omega Epsilon and Sigma Phi Delta-offer leadership development, community service and hands-on technical experiences that often become defining parts of a student's education.
Together, these experiences help students graduate with more than technical knowledge. They leave Lamar University having worked on teams, solved practical problems and developed the professional skills expected by employers.
The strength of Lamar University's engineering education is not reflected only in the careers of its graduates but also in national recognition.
Over the years, the College of Engineering has consistently ranked among the nation's leaders for return on investment. PayScale has recognized Lamar University as the top engineering program in Texas for 20-year return on investment and ranked it among the best in the nation, reflecting graduates' long-term earnings compared with the cost of earning their degree.
The college has also earned recognition for the quality of the academic programs, affordability and research enterprise. Its five engineering departments maintain ABET accreditation, while faculty secure millions of dollars annually in external research funding from organizations including the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Department of Energy and industry partners. The college's alumni include three members of the National Academy of Engineering, one of the profession's highest honors.
Those accolades demonstrate decades of investment in faculty, facilities and student success, but they likewise reinforce the college's original purpose: providing students with an accessible, high-quality engineering education for meaningful careers in Southeast Texas and beyond.
The industries surrounding Lamar University continue to evolve.
Engineering today is building sustainable energy systems, strengthening cybersecurity systems, advancing artificial intelligence, improving manufacturing technologies and developing solutions to challenges that did not exist when the college was founded in 1951.
The College of Engineering has developed alongside them, continuing to adapt as the region changes.
Yet despite decades of growth, new facilities and national recognition, its mission remains remarkably familiar: prepare engineers for the industries and communities that drive Southeast Texas.
The college was established to prepare engineers to support Southeast Texas' industries and boost its economy.
Seventy-five years later, it still does exactly that.
Each year, engineering graduates leave campus to design, build, innovate, and lead in communities across Texas and around the world. They carry forward an inheritance that began with one engineering instructor, was formed by a region built on innovation, and continues through a college that has spent the past 75 years preparing engineers for today's jobs and tomorrow's challenges. That legacy carries on, and so does the college's devotion to the region it was created to serve.
