HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Harpers Ferry National Historical Park invites veterans, their families and friends and community members to a program honoring veterans past and present at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, near the Storer College Veterans' Monument at Anthony Hall. The event is open to the public; entrance fees apply, but veterans can enter the park for free.
Local military and veterans' groups, schools, churches and community organizations will take part in the program, which will include music, speakers, a wreath-laying ceremony and a flag-raising. Speakers will share a brief history of Storer College and its students who served in World War I. Veterans with valid identification may obtain a free America the Beautiful Military Pass. American Sign Language interpretation will be provided.
The monument honors Storer College students who served in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War I.
At 2 p.m., military living-history volunteers and park staff will close the day by firing replica historic weapons in Lower Town.
Anthony Hall is located at 51 Mather Place, Harpers Ferry. Participants include Jefferson County High School Air Force Junior ROTC, the Harpers Ferry Middle School band, the Wainright Baptist Church choir and the Storer College Alumni Association. The event is sponsored by Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the Harpers Ferry Park Association.
The program is the final event in the park and park association's series marking the nation's 250th anniversary. Throughout the year, the series invited visitors to explore the places, people and choices that shaped the nation.
