Staying Connected this Holiday Season

The holiday checklist. Jurassic World Lego set-check. Demogorgon Squishmallow-check. Billie Eilish t-shirt-check. Every December, we power through the holiday wish list. But there is one item that rarely makes anyone's list: preparing for the moments someone needs help.

The season may be bright, but it can also be overwhelming. For many people, the holidays magnify stress or a sense of isolation. Surveys show that 64 percent of individuals with a mental illness report their symptoms worsen during the holidays. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, emergency departments around the country report increases in mental-health-related visits.

That is why "checking in" should be on everyone's holiday checklist. A quick call or message to someone who may be alone or struggling can make a real difference. And when someone needs more than a friendly voice, help is close at hand through two essential three-digit numbers: 911 and 988.

If you have a "Ralphie" moment with a coveted Red Ryder BB gun or spark more than cheer, like Clark Griswold (yes, I am dating myself with references to classic 1980s Christmas movies), calling 911 will connect you quickly with trained professionals who can provide life-saving assistance.

And if the pressures of the season are taking a toll on your mental health-or you are concerned about someone else-support is just as accessible through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which offers 24/7 confidential help through a nationwide network of more than 200 crisis centers staffed by skilled, compassionate counselors.

At the FCC, we work around the clock to keep Americans safe by keeping them connected. We are proud to have advanced many improvements to both 911 and 988 to help ensure that both systems are reliable, and that calls and texts are routed quickly and correctly.

But the bedrock strength of 911 and 988 comes from the thousands of dedicated 911 telecommunicators, 988 counselors, and first responders who work tirelessly to respond to people in need. Their service brings calm, clarity, and comfort in times when it counts the most.

No one expects to rely on 911 or 988 during the holidays. But these resources are here. They are simple to reach, always available, and ready to support you, your loved ones, and your community.

Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, healthy, and peaceful holiday season.
