HHSC Highlights Resources During Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October is the perfect time to learn more about the most common chromosomal condition worldwide.

About 5,700 babies are born and diagnosed with Down syndrome in the U.S. each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most babies are born with 23 pairs of chromosomes, with half of each pair from their father and the other half from their mother. Babies with Down syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21, which affects how their bodies and brains develop.

People with Down syndrome have a higher risk for respiratory, hearing and eye-related issues, congenital heart defects, thyroid disorders, and other medical conditions. Babies diagnosed with Down syndrome will likely experience developmental delays in motor, language and self-help skills, as well as social development.

Early intervention professionals can help parents and guardians develop strategies to best support their child's development. They can also provide services such as speech, occupational or physical therapy.

HHSC Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) and DSHS Healthy Mothers and Babies are programs that offer support for families with children diagnosed with Down syndrome.

"Through coaching, families are empowered to have a positive impact on their child's growth and development," said Carol Baisdon, ECI Quality Assurance therapist consultant. "The confidence they gain in their abilities leads to less stress about their child's disability and improved well-being for the whole family."
