Council continues to advocate for support with Low and Mid-Rise Housing Reforms

Georges River Council discussed concerns about the impact of the State Government's Low and Mid-Rise Housing (LMR) Policy at its Council Meeting on 28 April 2025.

Council is committed to housing, being part of the solution, however, needs State and Federal Government funding to support the population growth in the Georges River Local Government Area (LGA).

Local governments manage extensive infrastructure portfolios, and the scale, diversity, and financial demands of these assets are significant. At Georges River Council, this includes $1.8 billion in infrastructure, covering libraries, recreation centres, roads, stormwater systems, footpaths, and sporting fields, critical to community wellbeing and liveability.

Financing the renewal, maintenance, and upgrade of this infrastructure continues to present a major challenge, especially in a high-inflation environment. This challenge is heightened by capped revenue streams and rate pegging restrictions.

Maintaining and upgrading infrastructure is critical as the Georges River community grows. Insufficient funding has already contributed to a backlog of maintenance and rising long-term asset costs.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "Council is deeply committed to advocating for the support our community deserves, including essential infrastructure and housing."
