FEMA Makes Over $23 Million Available for Pre-Disaster Mitigation Resilience Projects in the Mid-Atlantic

PHILADELPHIA - Yesterday, FEMA announced that federal funding for hazard mitigation projects is available to Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia to address natural hazard risks. This funding will empower states to take decisive, proactive steps to protect their communities from future disasters.

Congress authorized 15 projects in these states through the Fiscal Year 2026 Homeland Security and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act. Funding for these projects has been made available through FEMA's Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant program. Nationwide, 40 states and one Tribal Nation are expected to receive more than $189 million in federal funding for 125 projects.

In FEMA Region 3, which covers the Mid-Atlantic, identified projects include:

Delaware

  • $1.5 million to the City of Wilmington for the Lower Brandywine Flood Mitigation project.
  • $758,000 to New Castle County for the Little Mill Creek Upper Reach Flood Control Project Major Maintenance.

Maryland

  • $1.1 million to Anne Arundel County for the Columbia Beach Resilience project.
  • $1.1 million to the City of Frederick for the West Patrick Street at Maryvale Ditch Flood Mitigation project.
  • $1.1 million to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for the Holly Beach Farm Resiliency project.
  • $1.1 million to the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection for the Wheaton Branch Flood Mitigation project.
  • $226,000 to Anne Arundel County for the Historic Whitehall Shoreline project.

Pennsylvania

  • $5.2 million to Lower Makefield Township for the Flood Mitigation and Stormwater Management project.
  • $2.4 million to Monroe County for the Goose Pond Dam Rehabilitation project.
  • $1.2 million to the Municipal Authority of the Town of Bloomsburg (MATB) for the Wastewater Treatment Plant Flood Mitigation project.
  • $1 million to the Municipal Authority of the City of Sunbury for the Flood Mitigation project.

Virginia

  • $1.7 million to the City of Harrisonburg for the Suter Street Drainage Improvement project.
  • $1.1 million to the City of Portsmouth for the Gust Lane Flood Mitigation Improvements project.

West Virginia

  • $3.2 million to the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center for the Emergency Operations Center HVAC Upgrades project.
  • $488,000 to the Town of Burnsville for the Landslide Remediation project.

Before funds are awarded, these communities must submit an application by July 22, 2026, by 5 p.m. Eastern Time. FEMA will review all applications and disburse funding only after confirming that eligibility criteria have been met.
