Northwest Dual Credit Scholarship now available to students enrolling for fall 2027

A new scholarship available at Northwest Missouri State University is making it more affordable for students with dual credit to gain admission to the University and pursue a bachelor's degree.

The Northwest Dual Credit Scholarship is a $1,500 annual award provided to students who have completed three hours of dual credit coursework through the University and are entering the institution as degree-seeking, first-time freshmen in the fall of 2027.

Students who receive the scholarship may renew it for up to four years, or eight semesters. The Dual Credit Scholarship also may be stacked with other Northwest automatic scholarships.

To be eligible for the scholarship, incoming students also must:

• Maintain a 3.00 GPA in dual credit coursework
• Enroll at Northwest full-time in at least 12 credit hours per semester
• Reside in on-campus housing

To be eligible for renewal, Dual Credit Scholarship recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.00 at Northwest and complete 24 credit hours annually. The scholarship is not available to commuter students or students who reside off-campus after their first year at Northwest.

Demonstrating the advantages of Dual Credit opportunities at Northwest on Friday, West Platte High School juniors and seniors enrolled in a dual credit general chemistry course visited the University campus to participate in a lab activity.

Working with chemistry faculty Tish Warner and Dr. Sarah McFall-Boegeman, the students took advantage of the opportunity to use equipment and tools in a Garrett-Strong Science Building lab where they measured the density of plastic materials.

"It's huge," said Shelly Day, a chemistry teacher at West Platte High School who also is an alumna with bachelor's and master's degrees from Northwest. "Whether my students are going into a science field, it's a very good introduction because it bridges the gap between high school expectations and college expectations. "I've been doing this for dual credit for 15 years, and it's not such a shock then when they get to full-time campus life of what's expected in those science classes compared to high school. It helps to prepare them for that transition."

Dual credit courses at Northwest provide students with a competitive edge in their pursuit of a college degree while saving time and money.

Dual credit is designed for high school students and allows them to complete college courses at a significantly discounted rate. Dual credit courses are offered in partner high schools with instructors who are approved to teach Northwest courses.

Online Dual Credit courses are available to high school students who do not have qualified instructors inside their high schools.

Since 2004, Northwest dual credit coursework has been accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP), which sets the national standard for concurrent enrollment programs, ensuring college courses taught in high schools match the rigor and quality of courses offered on campus.
