Delaware State Fire Commission Condemns Racial Harassment

The Delaware State Fire Commission unequivocally reaffirms its unwavering commitment to cultivating an environment of respect, inclusivity, and diversity by strongly denouncing all forms of racial harassment. This resolute statement arises in light of alarming recent incidents of racial harassment reported within the fire service-an issue we regard with the utmost seriousness.

Racial harassment, in any form, is intolerable and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Such behavior flies in the face of our core values and undermines the foundational principles of mutual respect and dignity we strive to uphold every day as members of the human community. We firmly believe that every individual, irrespective of their race, ethnicity, or background, deserves to be treated with fairness, kindness, and respect.

Our deep commitment to ensuring that the fire service is a safe and welcoming space for all individuals is paramount. Racial harassment has no place within public safety organizations, and we will continue to take all necessary and proactive steps to prevent it. When incidents do occur, we will address them promptly and ensure that those found responsible face appropriate consequences.

In addition to our strong condemnation of these harmful behaviors, the Commission fervently encourages fire companies across the state to actively reinforce and strengthen their policies on inclusion and harassment prevention. Suggested measures include the implementation of comprehensive diversity training, thorough updates to anti-harassment policies, additional support mechanisms for victims, and meaningful engagement in community outreach initiatives.

Recently, the Commission was alerted regarding an investigation conducted by the Millville Fire Company, which involved a complaint alleging that two volunteer firefighters were engaged in racial harassment. In accordance with standards set forth, each fire company within the state is mandated to notify the Commission upon receiving any complaint pertaining to misconduct by one of its members. The Millville Fire Company diligently conducted an internal investigation in accordance with Delaware Fire Service Regulations. Upon completion of their inquiry, they promptly informed our office that the incident was referred to the Delaware State Police due to suspicions that a crime had been committed.

We encourage all members of the fire service, as well as the public, to report any occurrences of racial harassment, reassured that their concerns will be treated with the gravity they deserve. Those who experience or witness such appalling behavior are urged to rise and report it, understanding that their voices contribute to the collective effort to eradicate harassment from our ranks.
