WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today ahead of the United States' talks with Iran:
"As the Trump Administration prepares to enter talks with Iran, it is crucial that we continue to pursue a permanent end to Iran's nuclear capabilities and the complete dismantlement of its nuclear infrastructure. Whether through these negotiations or alternative means, achieving that objective is absolutely essential to preserving the security of America, our ally Israel, and the world.
"Any agreement must also end Iran's malign activities throughout the region, including funding and providing strategic support to Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and its other terrorist proxies. Additionally, the negotiations need to address Iran's vast drone and ballistic missile arsenal. It is vital that we not allow Iran to use the negotiations to buy time and advance their nuclear program - especially with the window to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran closing imminently.
"For decades, Iran has posed a grave threat not only to the region but to the world. America ought to be prepared to do what it takes - diplomatically or otherwise - to achieve these goals and uphold our security."
