WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 2, 2026) - Congresswoman Nancy Mace (SC-01) sent a letter to the Acting Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services demanding an immediate pause to all federal funding for Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) after graphic sexual materials were found accessible to children.
"We've seen the content with our own eyes, and wish we hadn't. It's incestuous porn, it's grooming, and it's disgusting," said Rep. Mace. "A graphic novel depicting a child observing his father engaged in graphic sexual acts, an adult male masturbating while wearing a mask to appear like a child. Picture books with bondage scenes marketed to young kids. Anyone who thinks it's acceptable to put this near children has no business being around them or running a library, and definitely not on the taxpayers' dime."
The letter documents sexually explicit materials found at the John Dart Branch of CCPL, including a graphic novel titled Big Hard Sex Criminals Vol. 2 Deluxxxedepicting a child observing his father being anally penetrated by a dominatrix wearing a ball gag and nipple clamps, and an adult male masturbating while wearing a mask to appear like a child, Grandad's Prideshowing bondage scenes in a children's picture book, and multiple other sexually explicit materials targeted at young children, all accessible on CCPL shelves, potentially in violation of South Carolina state law.
"Tax dollars should NEVER be used to sexualize and groom our children," added Rep. Mace."Libraries are supposed to be places where children go to learn and grow. We won't stand silent and allow Charleston County to turn theirs into a distribution center for pornographic material targeting our kids."
Members of the Charleston County community have raised serious concerns about the sexually explicit content, but their voices were silenced by CCPL leadership.
Rep. Mace is demanding the Institute of Museum and Library Services immediately freeze all federal assistance to CCPL, including funds administered through the South Carolina State Library, until CCPL conducts a full review and removes sexually explicit content from children's reach.
"We will never apologize for protecting South Carolina's children," Rep. Mace added.
