Code of EthicsLegalSeptember 18, 2025
AdvaMed was honored to address delegates at the 12th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Ethics for SMEs Forum held in Seoul, Korea, on September 8-9, 2025. AdvaMed galvanized delegates from across the APEC region to advance high standard business integrity codes to ensure patients everywhere have access to the best medtech for them. The forum provided an opportunity for the medtech industry to engage with governments, patient and physician groups, and other healthcare stakeholders on the importance of leveling the playing field across the APEC region to ensure a fair and competitive environment and better outcomes for patients.
"AdvaMed applauds APEC's ongoing commitment to advancing high-standard business ethics in the medical technology sector," said Ida Nassar, AdvaMed's Head of Global Ethics and Compliance Policy. "This foundation is essential for SMEs to innovate and compete fairly, and governments play a critical role in fostering this environment to ensure patients have access to safe, life-changing technologies."
SMEs make up the majority of AdvaMed's more than 600 members, and their success depends on a global marketplace that values and rewards integrity. AdvaMed's Code of Ethics provides timely, effective guidance that supports ethical business conduct across medtech, building trust and enabling partnerships that drive SME growth, sustainability, and further integration into global supply chains.
Digital Health Technologies are transforming the landscape of healthcare, providing powerful new tools for patient care, clinical decision-making, and health data management. Recognizing medtech's fast-paced operating environment, AdvaMed will release an updated Code of Ethics this year.
"This Code update reaffirms the industry's longstanding commitment to patient safety, responsible innovation, and data stewardship, while ensuring the Code's guidance is timely, relevant, and effective," said Nassar.
By following these principles, companies can navigate the complex intersection of technology and healthcare, strengthening trust with patients, providers, and regulators alike.
Looking ahead, AdvaMed supports a collective effort to update the APEC Kuala Lumpur Principles in 2026, helping ensure today's high standards of ethics are accessible across the global medtech sector.
In 2010, AdvaMed® with partners including the U.S. Department of Commerce, founded the APEC Business Ethics for SMEs Initiative and has championed the Initiative to much success, extending high-standard codes to 31 medical technology associations across 19 economies in the APEC region. These associations collectively represent over 12,000 member enterprises, of which over 10,000 are identified as SMEs. The initiative is also supported by a capacity building platform with an expert team of over 60 members, led by AdvaMed®, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce and other stakeholders.
