Prime Minister Michal to discuss defence and support for Ukraine with European leaders in Copenhagen

Stenbock House, 1 October 2025 - Prime Minister Kristen Michal is in Copenhagen today, attending an informal meeting of the European Council that will focus on bolstering support for Ukraine, fostering Europe's common defence capabilities and ways in which the EU can increase its support for countries on its eastern flank. Tomorrow, the Danish capital will also host a meeting of the European Political Community which will bring together the leaders of 47 European countries.

Prime Minister Michal says that Russian provocations - from violating Estonian airspace to drone incidents across the continent - show that air and drone defences need urgently to be reinforced. "None of these provocations undermine our support for Ukraine," he added. "On the contrary, we must increase our aid to the country, using frozen Russian assets to do so." He also called for faster progress in EU accession negotiations with both Ukraine and Moldova, stating that the first chapters should be opened without delay.

On Thursday, Copenhagen will be hosting the 7th summit of the European Political Community (EPC). This will be preceded by a dinner hosted this evening by King Frederik X of Denmark. Launched in 2022, the EPC format brings together 47 European countries as well as the heads of EU institutions, NATO, the Council of Europe and the OSCE. The overarching theme of the Copenhagen summit is 'A Stronger Europe', with ongoing support for Ukraine at its core.

Four roundtables will take place as part of the event. One of these, on security and resilience, will be co-chaired by Prime Minister Michal and his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Støre, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine and the secretaries-general of NATO and the OSCE being among those scheduled to take part.

On the eve of the informal meeting of the European Council, Prime Minister Michal also met with Danish entrepreneurs at a roundtable event at the Estonian embassy in Copenhagen.
