WASHINGTON, DC - Today, after President Donald Trump shared a video on social media that sought to promote falsehoods about the 2020 election and featured a racist depiction of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, U.S. Senator Jack Reed issued the following statement:
"I am absolutely disgusted by President Trump's racist and dehumanizing social media post.
"First, President Trump spewed this fraudulent nonsense and amplified racism. Then his staff sought to defend it before retreating and scapegoating a nameless staffer.
"When good people call out racism, it has a positive impact. I am grateful to the many principled leaders across the political spectrum who spoke out against the president's actions today and sent a clear message that his brand of racism and bigotry is shameful, wrong, and has no place in our society.
"Trump's message was reprehensible. The fact that he was called out and publicly shamed is encouraging."
