Parliament, Sunday, 1 February 2026 - A joint parliamentary delegation comprising the select and portfolio committees on cooperative governance and traditional affairs will undertake a week-long oversight visit to flood-affected areas in Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
This follows extreme weather conditions across the country, including flooding in these two provinces, which resulted in loss of life and significant damage to property and infrastructure. A national disaster has since been declared under Section 23 of the National Disaster Management Act.
In view of these developments, the Joint Programming Committee of Parliament, on 20 January 2026, recommended that committees in both the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and the National Assembly (NA) responsible for monitoring the implementation of disaster management legislation undertake oversight visits to the affected provinces.
This week, from 3 to 6 February, the joint delegation will engage with, among others, the national and provincial Disaster Management Centres, representatives from provincial governments and legislatures, traditional leadership, and relevant sector departments. The delegation will determine what plans are in place to assist communities affected by the floods.
The oversight will be led by the Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Public Administration in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), which is mandated to represent and oversee provincial matters.
