HONOLULU - Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is updating all highway users on Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay following the closure Friday, April 10. Loose material has been removed and barriers with rock fencing are being installed on the highway beneath the areas the boulders came from. A cultural blessing of the pohaku will be arranged prior to its removal from the road to Waimea Valley.
Until approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, vehicles are being turned around on the Kahuku side of the closure at Three Tables and on the Haleʻiwa side of the closure at 'Iliohu Way.
Once the fencing is installed, HDOT will reopen a single lane. At that time traffic will be maintained in both directions with flaggers. Please follow the directions of the on-site personnel and stay within the single lane.
After the single lane is opened this afternoon, HDOT plans to keep the mauka lane closed until the saturated slopes dry. HDOT will continue to update as conditions at Waimea change.
