Unapologetic Excellence at FVSU: Celebrating More than 1,000 Scholars at Honors Convocation

Fort Valley, GA - Fort Valley State University (FVSU) recently held its 74th Honors Day Convocation, a tradition established in 1951. This year's ceremony was a momentous occasion, celebrating the academic achievements of 1,008 scholars across all class levels. Adding to its significance, the convocation coincided with FVSU's 130th anniversary, celebrating "130 Years of Unapologetic Excellence"-a declaration of our legacy of success, scholarship and sustainability.

The freshman class was well-represented, with 266 students earning honors. The sophomore class had a total of 268 scholars, including 145 students receiving honors for the second consecutive year. The junior class consisted of 232 students, with 92 earning honors for the second time and 76 for the third time. Lastly, the senior class of 2025 had 242 scholars, with 55 receiving honors for the second time, 84 for the third time, and 66 students being recognized for the fourth time or more.

This year also marked a historic first for FVSU with a five-way tie for the highest GPA among female athletes. This milestone highlights the dedication and excellence of student-athletes in balancing their academic and athletic commitments

The event featured keynote speaker Kyle Harris, Ph.D., an assistant professor at Florida A&M University and distinguished FVSU alumnus, who delivered an inspiring address to the honored scholars. He emphasized three key points in his address:

  1. Ask. Harris encouraged students to take full advantage of the resources available on campus, reinforcing the idea that FVSU is a strong, supportive community that fosters academic and personal growth.
  2. Make public service a way of life. He highlighted the university's legacy of being "the light in the valley," urging students to extend their efforts beyond the campus to serve and uplift their communities.
  3. Preserve and honor the university's legacy. Harris reminded students of the importance of cherishing the history and values that define FVSU and emphasized that excellence should never be something to apologize for but rather a source of pride. As future alumni, students should carry their university's legacy with their heads held high.

This year's Honors Convocation was a true celebration of academic success, service and the enduring spirit of Fort Valley State University.
