Boston Children’s Hospital and Franciscan Children’s Break Ground on New Campus in Brighton

On October 8, Boston Children's Hospital and Franciscan Children's celebrated the groundbreaking of a new pediatric behavioral health campus in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston. The milestone marks the start of a transformative project that will expand access to integrated, compassionate behavioral health and rehabilitation services for children, adolescents, and their families across Massachusetts and beyond.

Team members celebrate the groundbreaking of the Boston Children's Hospital and Franciscan Children's new pediatric behavioral health campus. Representing VHB at the groundbreaking were Nathaniel Fleming, Tom Lorenz-Ferris and Howard Moshier.

Located on the Franciscan Children's campus, the new facility will bring a comprehensive continuum of care together in one therapeutic, family-centered setting. The first phase is planned as a 116-bed pediatric psychiatric hospital, helping nearly double Boston Children's inpatient psychiatric capacity. The $640 million project will address a critical and growing need for specialized pediatric behavioral health services.

Designed to support patients with a range of behavioral health, rehabilitation, and complex medical needs, the campus will include inpatient psychiatric care, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs, acute treatment, rehabilitation, dental, pharmacy, and surgical services. Thoughtfully designed patient rooms, family spaces, and outdoor therapeutic and play areas will help create a welcoming environment that promotes comfort, healing, and connection.

The project is supported by significant philanthropic investment, including a $100 million gift from Rob and Karen Hale and a $10 million leadership grant from Bank of America. The new campus is also expected to generate meaningful economic benefits for the community, creating an estimated 150 to 200 local jobs and more than 3,320 construction jobs.

"We are proud to help bring this vital behavioral health campus from vision to reality. This project reflects a shared commitment to creating a welcoming, healing environment that supports children, families, and the Brighton community," said Project Manager, Lisa Chow.
