The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) has been awarded Full Accreditation for three years by the Council on Accreditation of the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP), following its June 2026 meeting.
This recognition affirms USU's continued commitment to the highest standards of ethical conduct in research and the protection of the rights and welfare of research participants.
The accreditation was formally announced as part of AAHRPP's broader June 2026 actions, in which the organization also accredited five entities worldwide, including leading academic medical centers, government institutions, and industry partners. USU joins more than 600 organizations globally that have demonstrated compliance with AAHRPP's rigorous standards for human subjects protections.
AAHRPP President and CEO Elyse I. Summers highlighted the significance of the accreditation decisions, noting that each new accreditation strengthens the global research enterprise and reinforces public trust in science. She also emphasized the importance of USU's inclusion among newly accredited organizations, stating that the University's decision to pursue accreditation reflects a deliberate commitment to safe, ethical research.
"To earn and maintain accreditation, organizations must demonstrate that they adhere to AAHRPP's high standards for research," AAHRPP noted in its announcement. "These include incorporating extensive safeguards throughout their research operation and committing to a culture of continuous improvement."
The newly accredited organizations announced alongside USU include MedStar Health Research Institute (Columbia, MD); Merck & Co., Inc. (Rahway, NJ, USA), Merck Research Laboratories, Global Clinical Development; MSD Korea Co., Ltd., Global Clinical Trial Operations; and TriHealth Inc. (Cincinnati, OH).
AAHRPP also awarded reaccreditation to more than 20 institutions worldwide, including major academic health systems and universities such as Mass General Brigham, Johns Hopkins Medicine, the University of Michigan, Emory University, and the University of Virginia.
USU officials noted that the accreditation reflects the University's ongoing dedication to safeguarding research participants while advancing biomedical research in support of military medicine and public health.
"This accreditation reinforces our responsibility to uphold the highest ethical standards in human subjects research," said Dr. Laura Brosch, interim Vice Provost for Research at USU. "It reflects the integrity of our research enterprise and the commitment of our faculty, staff, and investigators to protecting those who participate in our studies."
