In February 2026, the University of St. Thomas (UST) welcomed Director General Hsiao I-Fang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) for a compelling lecture on how Taiwan stands strong and how the work TECO continues to advance with the support of friends of Taiwan and Taiwanese communities worldwide.
The event was hosted by Dr. Yao-Yuan Yeh, director of the Taiwan & East Asia Studies Program at UST. Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. John Palasota, vice president for Academic Affairs at UST.
Dr. Yeh was delighted that students, faculty and staff could enjoy the lecture.
"Director General Ivonne Hsiao delivered a clear message regarding how critical Taiwan is to the U.S. national interest, and how its existence is key to the U.S. success," he said. "The Taiwan & East Asia Program at UST aims to cultivate the next generation of American leaders who are aware of Taiwan's critical role, and Director General Hsiao certainly achieved such a goal by her outstanding speech. We truly appreciate the continuing support from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Houston."
More than 50 attendees were present, including Sister Cities of Houston President James Post and Secretary Anna Post. The audience expressed strong appreciation for the rich and informative content of the lecture and actively participated in a lively Q&A session.
Director General Hsiao highlighted Taiwan's global leadership in areas such as democracy and freedom, technological innovation, healthcare, and quality of life. She also explained in clear and accessible terms how China has sought to limit Taiwan's international participation, conducted gray-zone harassment, and even threatened the personal safety of Taiwan's government officials and elected representatives. In addition, she emphasized the Taiwanese government's determination to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and its commitment to working closely with like-minded international partners to maintain regional peace and stability.
"Learning experiences like these are invaluable for students in our Taiwan & East Asia Studies Program," said Dr. Palasota. "Welcoming distinguished guests like Director General Hsiao allows students to hear firsthand about world events, enhancing their global perspective on ethics, sound leadership and cultural sensitivity."
