From Comic Books to Combat Zones: Dr. Cord Scott Brings Military History to Life for UMGC Students

Learning goes beyond textbooks-and Dr. Cord Scott proves it. As a UMGC professor of history and humanities currently teaching in Okinawa, Dr. Scott uses pop culture, comic books, and global perspectives to make military history resonate with today's students. His groundbreaking research, including the acclaimed Comics and Conflict, explores how graphic storytelling has shaped public understanding of war, patriotism, and identity across generations.

With a teaching career that spans continents, from Kuwait to Korea, Dr. Scott's uniquely global lens and dynamic classroom approach helps UMGC learners-many of whom are active-duty military or veterans-think critically and engage deeply in connecting historical narratives to their own lived experiences.
