EDWIN RAYMOND SWORN IN AS NEW YORK CITY SHERIFF

Edwin Raymond Sworn in as New York City Sheriff Oath of Office Administered by New York State Attorney General Letitia James During Ceremony at Brooklyn College

NEW YORK - Edwin Raymond was officially sworn in today as New York City Sheriff during a ceremony at Brooklyn College, where New York State Attorney General Letitia James administered the oath of office. Sheriff Raymond assumed his duties on May 29, 2026 following his appointment by Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani.

As Sheriff, Raymond will lead one of the nation's oldest law enforcement agencies. The Sheriff's Office is New York City's chief civil law-enforcement agency and the law-enforcement division of the Department of Finance. Its deputies enforce court orders and judgments, serve orders of protection, seize illegal firearms and contraband, investigate deed and tax fraud, and carry out many other responsibilities essential to public safety and the administration of justice.

"Sheriff Edwin Raymond understands that public safety requires public trust, and he has always fought for the transparency and accountability our communities deserve. I know that he will serve our city with integrity, compassion, and a deep commitment to justice. I am proud to celebrate his swearing-in as New York City's next Sheriff, and I look forward to continuing to work together on behalf of all New Yorkers," said New York Attorney General Letitia James.

"Sheriff Edwin Raymond has dedicated his life to protecting the people of New York while bettering the institutions tasked with keeping us safe. He grew up in East Flatbush, the son of Haitian immigrants. He became an NYPD officer to build bridges and write a new legacy. His life's work has been fighting for truth, justice, and safety. I can think of no one better to serve as the Sheriff of the City of New York," said Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani.

"Serving as New York City Sheriff is a tremendous privilege and a responsibility I do not take lightly. Growing up in East Flatbush as the son of Haitian immigrants, I learned firsthand that keeping our working-class neighborhoods safe depends on trust in government and the institutions that serve our communities. Throughout my career, I have been committed to public service and to strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and the people we serve. As Sheriff, I will continue to lead with integrity, accountability, and fairness, and I look forward to working alongside the dedicated professionals of the Sheriff's Office to serve and protect all New Yorkers," said New York City Sheriff Edwin Raymond.

Sheriff Edwin Raymond is a retired New York City Police Department lieutenant and former Social Justice Liaison in the New York State Office of the Attorney General. During his 15-year NYPD career, he served in a variety of operational and leadership roles, ultimately leading Community Affairs for Patrol Borough Brooklyn North. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his leadership and commitment to advancing integrity and accountability in law enforcement. As New York City Sheriff, Raymond oversees the Sheriff's Office within the Department of Finance, which enforces court orders, protects consumers and businesses from fraud and illegal activity, conducts tax enforcement, and supports public safety initiatives citywide.
