Southeast Missouri State University will host its Accounting Summer Camp on June 12, offering high school students an opportunity to explore careers in accounting through hands-on activities, mentorship and conversations with professionals in the field.
Designed for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, the free one-day camp introduces students to the wide range of career paths available in accounting, from working with businesses and sports organizations to investigating financial crimes through forensic accounting. No prior accounting coursework is required to participate.
Hosted by SEMO's Department of Accounting, Economics, and Finance in the Harrison College of Business and Computing, the camp will give students an inside look at the accounting profession while connecting them with faculty, current students and alumni working as certified public accountants.
"This camp brings accounting to life for students," said Dr. Leisa Marshall, professor of accounting at SEMO. "Participants will work alongside our accounting alumni, solve real-world problems and get a firsthand look at what the profession looks like day to day. It's designed to be interactive and fun, from hands-on activities throughout the day to a scavenger hunt and trivia competition that puts what they've learned to the test.
Throughout the day, participants will work alongside accounting mentors to solve financial challenges, explore forensic accounting scenarios and take part in interactive activities focused on financial, managerial and tax accounting. Students will also hear directly from SEMO alumni and current students during a practitioner panel focused on career pathways and college experiences.
