Fifteen University of Wyoming students participated in the annual Wyoming Pi Days event hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
There were three evening sessions where students ate pizza, worked on fun mathematics problems and learned new problem-solving strategies. The event culminated in the Pi Days competition April 11, where students took an exam. All students who participated received T-shirts and puzzles.
Two winners were selected based on their outstanding submissions on the exam: Husanpreet Singh, who's from Tarn Taran, India, majoring in astronomy and astrophysics, with a minor in honors; and Dani Jones, of Gillette, who received a bachelor's degree in environmental systems science with minors in geology and mathematics. Jones will pursue a graduate certificate for secondary mathematics education this fall.
Receiving honorable mention was Corbyn Guse, a Laramie High School student who will attend UW full time this fall with a major in secondary mathematics education.
Wyoming Pi Days was organized by Kostas Kydoniatis, Tyrrell McAllister and Christina Knox, with assistance from Eric Moorhouse, Long Lee and Roman Winter.
