Van Hollen Statement on Rep. Hoyer Retirement Announcement

Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) released the following statement on Rep. Steny Hoyer's announcement that he will retire from Congress:

"Listening to Steny Hoyer's remarks on the floor of the House this morning was a reminder of how much we will miss his voice in Congress after he retires. Steny has been both a leader of our party and a leader of our federal delegation. He is one of our state's staunchest defenders and our party's strongest fighters. It's been an honor to serve with him, to work together for Marylanders and our nation.

"During our time in House leadership, I saw firsthand how his tireless dedication helped make it possible for the House to pass landmark Democratic priorities, including the Affordable Care Act, for the good of our country - even with the tightest of margins. I've also witnessed his commitment to racial and social justice both here in Maryland and across the nation and his work to create opportunity for all, through his leadership of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

"Even as he fought on these national priorities - and led foreign policy initiatives through his role on the Helsinki Commission - he never wavered in his focus on delivering results for his district and our state. From his efforts to secure federal support for important military bases like Naval Air Station Patuxent River to our institutions of higher learning, like the University of Maryland, to so much more - Steny is Team Maryland through and through. Fortunately for us, I know Steny will keep running through the tape, and even today, we discussed the work that remains to be done before he departs.

"While I've served alongside Steny for many years, never has our resolve been as tested - or as critical - as it has during Trump's Administrations. Together we've stood up to their lawless attacks on our federal workers, on our Maryland-based federal institutions, and on our democracy. I'm grateful to Steny's family and loved ones - especially Elaine, Susan, Stefany, and Anne - for their steadfast support. And I'm grateful to Steny for his tenacity and unrelenting commitment to justice and equality, especially during these tough times - our nation and our state are better for it."
