Two Bulldogs Receive USM Board of Regents Student Excellence Scholarships

Two Bowie State University students earned the 2026 University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Student Excellence Scholarships.

Freshman Jordon Hurley and Sophomore Arielle Johnson join a cohort of twelve students across the USM system recognized for academic achievement. The Board of Regents presents these scholarships as its highest student honor.

Jordon Hurley '29 is a Visual Communications and Digital Media Arts major who applies his storytelling skills to entrepreneurship projects and community impact. A cornerstone of his creative work is his role with Bowie State University Athletics, where he captures games, practices and media days and helps shape the visual identity of BSU's athletic programs. Hurley also runs his own photography business, managing clients, shoots and postproduction, and volunteers with his church and local youth organizations.

Arielle Johnson '28 is a History and Government major with a Pre-Law minor. Through continued involvement in student organizations, she prioritizes equity, inclusion and meaningful representation of student voices across campus. Johnson is vice president of the Pre-Law Society, where she plans programs connecting students with Black legal professionals and local elected officials, providing exposure to careers in law and public service. She also works as a legislative aide for state Sen. Joanne Benson.

USM Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden said of the award recipients, "It's a joy to see how much curiosity and creativity they bring to their work, and how much passion drives their purpose. I have no doubt that these are the leaders who will shape our future, and that fills me with optimism."
