Sen. Moran: We should not allow Haskell to become another promise we fail to keep

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) spoke on the Senate Floor this week about the need to reform Haskell Indian Nations University to better serve students, faculty and staff.

"Haskell University serves as a custodian of Tribal culture offering students the opportunity to receive tuition-free higher education in an environment that understands and prioritizes indigenous values," said Sen. Moran. "Yet, despite its critical importance, Haskell has faced significant challenges."

"The history of the federal government's treatment of Native Americans is filled with broken promises," continued Sen. Moran. "We should not allow Haskell - a cornerstone of Native American higher education - to become another promise we fail to keep. The students who walk through the doors at Haskell deserve better than the inefficiency and mismanagement and neglect they face under the current governance system."

Sen. Moran and Rep. Tracey Mann (KS-01) released draft legislation that would federally charter Haskell Indian Nations University and transfer governance of the university from the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) to the Haskell Board of Regents, while maintaining federal funding for the university.

Sen. Moran and Rep. Mann are seeking feedback from the Native American, Lawrence and higher education communities on the proposed legislation to ensure the bill effectively addresses key issues at Haskell University.
