Yaw: State Funding Awarded for Mifflinburg Borough Sewer Infrastructure Upgrades

HARRISBURG-State Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23) today announced $371,507 has been awarded to Mifflinburg Borough for upgrades to its sewer infrastructure. The award was considered at today's Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) meeting and approved through the Authority's Local Share Account (LSA) statewide program.

"Sound infrastructure is vital to protecting public health and ensuring reliable service," Yaw said. "Local governments often operate with tight budgets and are working with aging systems that are long overdue for upgrades. This investment will make a real difference, and I was pleased to support this award."

The Borough's sanitary sewer system was constructed in the 1950s and 1960s, and portions of the aging infrastructure are now deteriorating. Groundwater and stormwater infiltrate the sewer mains, placing additional strain on the system and, at times, causing the wastewater treatment plant to overflow.

The project will focus on Ward Way, North and South 3rd streets, Lemon Lane and Cherry, Green and Maple streets. Work will include the replacement and reconstruction of approximately 1,629 feet of sewer main to improve the system's capacity, reliability and overall performance. Funding will also support engineering and administrative costs associated with the project.

"The Borough appreciates Sen. Yaw's support and the CFA's investment in Mifflinburg," said Borough Manager Margaret Metzger. "This project will help Mifflinburg complete some much-needed infrastructure work to reduce infiltration and inflow, improve reliability and support the community's future residential and economic growth."

Local Share Account funds are generated by the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act (Act 71 of 2004), which provides for distributing gaming revenues through the CFA to support projects in the public interest within Pennsylvania.
