Sierra Club Statement on the Passing of Jane Goodall

Washington, DC - World-renowned primatologist and conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall has died at the age of 91. A friend and leader for the entire environmental movement, Goodall was honored with the Sierra Club's Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual Trail Blazers Ball event in April 2025.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Loren Blackford released the following statement:

"Throughout her life's work, Jane Goodall embraced the connection between places, people, and the natural world, upon which she leaves an indelible mark. Fiercely independent and courageous in her approach, she was the very definition of a trailblazer, charting a path for women in research and in the greater conservation movement. Jane often said that her greatest hope is our young people, and we are all better for her work to inspire and excite the next generations of leaders in our space.

"Jane Goodall was an inspiration to us all, and we should aspire to carry her wisdom, her mission, and her love for nature and people forward. She will be sorely missed by all of us here at the Sierra Club and around the world."
