SR 400 Express Lanes April 2026 Newsletter

S1

Segment A

Early construction activities are underway between Abernathy Road and Roberts Drive, with crews preparing for future traffic shifts near the SR 400 southbound North Springs MARTA Station and Abernathy Road ramps. Motorists can expect to see temporary traffic shifts, barriers, pavement markings, and crews working along SR 400 southbound (Spalding Drive to Abernathy Road) and SR 400 northbound (Northridge Road to Roberts Drive).

Segment B

Initial work will take place near the Holcomb Bridge Road interchange, including the northbound on-ramp and southbound off-ramp, as well as portions of SR 400 southbound (Holcomb Bridge Road to the Chattahoochee River) and SR 400 northbound (Encore Parkway to Haynes Bridge Road). Early activities will include clearing and installation of temporary barriers and signage.

Segment C

Construction work in this area will begin in late spring with traffic control setup and early clearing activities. Initial work will be visible along SR 400 northbound (McGinnis Ferry Road to McFarland Parkway), where crews will establish work zones, then proceed with clearing and grading operations. Early work will also include installing temporary signage, pavement markings, and drainage improvements. The initial work zone setup is expected to begin in May.

A New Kind of Express Lanes Experience on State Route 400

When complete, the SR 400 Express Lanes will offer a flexible and reliable travel option unlike any other express lane corridor currently operating in Georgia. While some express lanes in the state operate on unidirectional schedules, such as the I-75 Express Lanes, which primarily run inbound in the morning and outbound in the evening, the SR 400 Express Lanes will be open bidirectional, 24 hours a day in both the northbound and southbound lanes, allowing commuters the flexibility to utilize the lanes at any time.

The corridor is also designed for easy and convenient accessibility. Entry and exit points will be located near each major interchange, allowing drivers to conveniently enter or leave the express lanes close to their origin or destination.

The lanes will operate using dynamic pricing, meaning toll rates will adjust in real time based on traffic conditions to maintain reliable travel times. Drivers will be able to pay using their current Peach Pass or identified interoperable toll tag transponders (check peachpass.com for eligibility). Once operational, the lanes are designed to operate at or above 55 miles average speeds per hour, supported by advanced traffic monitoring and corridor management technology.

The project also includes a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) component operated by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). MARTA buses will be able to use the express lanes toll-free, helping provide faster and more reliable transit service along the corridor.

Together, these features will create a modern transportation option designed to improve mobility and provide more reliable travel choices for drivers and transit riders along SR 400.

National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 20-24, 2026)

As the SR 400 Express Lanes project moves toward heavy construction, Work Zone Awareness Week is a timely reminder that Safe Actions Save Lives. With more crews and equipment present along the corridor, it's critical for motorists to slow down and stay alert when approaching and passing through work zones.

Avoid distractions, reduce your speed, and stay aware of workers and changing traffic patterns. Remember-work zones are active job sites, and a few extra seconds of caution can make a life-saving difference for everyone on the road.

S4

If you've been traveling along SR 400 lately, you may have spotted some new trucks patrolling the corridor - and they're here to help! The SR 400 Incident Response Units (IRUs) are now on the road as construction on the SR 400 Express Lanes project ramps up in Fulton and Forsyth counties. From clearing debris to helping with flat tires, stalled vehicles, or even an empty gas tank, these units are all about keeping traffic moving and drivers safe.

Motorists in need of assistance on SR 400 should continue to call 511 for non-emergency help and 911 for emergencies.

S5

As construction activity increases along the SR 400 corridor, you may notice work happening at designated construction staging areas. These temporary spaces are used to stage materials, equipment, and supplies close to active work zones-helping crews work more efficiently and reducing the number of delivery trucks on the road.
