Portland, OR - One year removed from the passage of Donald Trump's Big Ugly Bill, Oregon's communities are still feeling the impacts of the violent and reckless federal immigration enforcement the legislation funded.
The bill gave ICE around $75 billion in new funding to increase detentions and deportations across the country. In Oregon, Trump's directive to federal agents to deploy dangerous and reckless tactics - labeled "Operation Black Rose" - has wreaked havoc on families and communities across the state.
Most recently, reporting from OPB highlighted how increased immigration enforcement impacted student attendance, with Hispanic students skipping school days, leaving classes early, and struggling to focus. Meanwhile, Republican candidate for governor Christine Drazan has refused to stand up to Trump's assault on immigrant communities, or, in some cases, actively worked to advance it.
Earlier this year, the Oregon Legislature passed an eight-bill legislative package aimed at defending the state from Trump's dangerous immigration enforcement practices. Meanwhile, Drazan was nowhere to be found: as the package of bills moved through the legislature, Drazan recorded seven absences. On the one bill she showed up for, Drazan voted against legislation that prohibits discrimination in education related to immigration or citizenship status.
"Time and time again, Christine Drazan has demonstrated that she won't stand up to Trump to protect Oregon families and communities," said Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Nathan Soltz. "From siding with the President on sending the National Guard to Oregon, to stepping aside for his cruel and reckless federal immigration enforcement, Drazan continues to open the door for Trump at every opportunity."
