Issue Brief on “Punjab Monsoon Floods 2025 and Implications for National Food Security”

Heavy monsoon rains, flash floods, and excessive water release from Indian dams into Pakistani rivers have severely impacted Punjab, Sindh, and KPK. [1] For the first time in three decades, water levels in the Chenab and Sutlej rivers reached a critical high, inundating millions of hectares of crop land in Pakistan's agricultural heartland. According to the Pakistan Business Forum, approximately 60% of the rice crop, 35 % of cotton, and 30% of sugarcane in Punjab have been damaged. The Forum has urged the federal government to declare an agricultural emergency to address agro-economic losses. [2] These floods have far-reaching implications for national food security and economic stability, causing food shortages, rural poverty, inflation, and trade imbalances.
