The Sheriff's Office proposed agreement with Flock Safety has been re-scheduled to return to the Board of Supervisors on September 22, 2026. The September 22nd meeting was selected to provide an opportunity for the full Board of Supervisors to participate in the discussion and ensure representation of all Monterey County districts.

The Sheriff's Office was prepared to move forward with the matter on its originally scheduled date of August 25, 2026. Prior to the meeting, however, we were presented with more than 30 questions regarding the proposed use of Flock Safety technology. Given the number and scope of those questions, additional time was necessary to thoroughly review the questions and provide thorough responses to the Board and the public.

"I believe it is important that the Board and our community have complete and accurate information before this matter is considered," Sheriff Tina Nieto said. "It is equally important that every district in Monterey County is represented in this discussion."

Flock Safety technology has assisted law enforcement agencies in Monterey County with investigations and has provided information that has helped identify vehicles associated with criminal activity. At the same time, we understand that members of our community have questions and concerns about the use of Automated License Plate Reader technology, including privacy, access to data, how information is used and shared, and the safeguards that are in place. We welcome those questions and are prepared to discuss these concerns openly, explain the policies and safeguards governing the technology, and provide the public and the Board with accurate information about how the Sheriff's Office proposes to use it.

"Whether you support Flock, oppose it, or simply have questions or concerns, I encourage you to attend and make your voice heard," Sheriff Nieto said. "We have seen how this technology can assist law enforcement investigations in Monterey County, but we also understand that its use comes with questions and concerns from our community. Those concerns deserve to be heard and addressed. Our responsibility is to provide accurate information, explain the safeguards that are in place, answer the questions being raised, and listen to the community we serve."

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office encourages members of the public to participate in the September 22, 2026, Board of Supervisors meeting, regardless of their position on Flock Safety technology. An informed and open discussion provides the Board and the public an opportunity to consider both the public safety benefits of the technology and the concerns surrounding its use. Participation can be accomplished whether you attend the meeting in-person or utilize the Zoom link to attend virtually.
