MaineHealth Memorial Hospital Earns CMS Four-Star Quality Rating

NORTH CONWAY, NH - MaineHealth Memorial Hospital has earned a four-star Overall Hospital Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), placing the hospital among the nation's higher-performing hospitals for quality, safety and patient care.

The CMS Star Rating system evaluates hospitals nationwide using a standardized set of quality measures, including patient outcomes, safety of care, readmissions, mortality, patient experience and timely access to treatment. Hospitals receive an overall rating of one to five stars, allowing patients and families to easily compare performance. A four-star rating indicates performance that is well above average compared to hospitals across the country.

"This recognition reflects our team's deep commitment to providing safe, reliable, and compassionate care," said MaineHealth Memorial Hospital President Tricia Costigan. "It's the result of countless daily interactions where our staff put patients first."

CMS updates its ratings periodically using publicly reported data, making this achievement a meaningful benchmark of consistency over time, not just a single moment of performance. Hospital leaders say the four-star rating validates recent quality improvement work while reinforcing a culture focused on accountability and continuous learning.

Larissa Nattrass, MaineHealth Memorial Hospital Director of Quality and Safety, says quality improvement is woven into everything care team members do. "From clinical decision-making to patient communication, our teams are constantly asking how we can do better."

She says staff across departments, including providers, nurses, technicians, environmental services and administrative teams played a role in achieving the rating. Nattrass credits strong collaboration, ongoing staff education and the use of data to guide patient-safety initiatives as key factors.

"This rating belongs to everyone who works here and to the patients who partner with us in their care. Patient feedback is essential, and it helps us continue to improve."

While the four-star rating is an important national recognition, Costigan adds that MaineHealth Memorial Hospital's mission remains deeply local: meeting the health needs of the community with personalized, accessible care.

"We're proud of this achievement," Costigan says. "But more importantly, it motivates us to keep raising the bar for our patients, every day."

All eight MaineHealth system hospitals met the criteria for a CMS Star Rating with MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (Portland) and MaineHealth Stephens Hospital (Norway, Maine) joining MaineHealth Memorial Hospital in earning four stars from CMS. The five other MaineHealth system hospitals earned three stars. MaineHealth CEO Andy Mueller, MD says the goal is to have all eight hospitals achieve a rating of at least four stars within five years.
