The Cedar Rapids Police Department has released crime statistics for May 2026. Our team continues active policing in every part of the city, from downtown patrol at farmers' markets and nightlife, to the final days of classes for students and our School Resource Officers. 10 new Cedar Rapids police recruits were joined Monday by six other students from five area law-enforcement agencies for Day One of the 19-week Cedar Rapids Police Regional Police Academy.
An area of concern this month, Cedar Rapids police have made 227 OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) arrests so far this year. This is a concerning spike against year-to-year and five-year-average comparisons. 2026 numbers are 21% higher than 2025 and 23% higher than the previous five years. While this shows our team is focused on identifying and stopping impaired drivers, Traffic Division Commander Sergeant Graham Campshure noted many arrested drivers claim to be unaware of Iowa laws. "We are seeing many drivers from out-of-state surprised by our strict stance on OWI, open containers, and the use of legal marijuana in other states." He continued "Iowa law is clear and so is CRPD. If you consume alcohol, narcotics or psychoactive substances and choose to drive, we will stop and arrest you." Iowa's threshold for intoxication is a blood-alcohol level of .08% and zero-tolerance for illegal substances.
Safe streets are a priority for our Department.
