Advisory: Marquette experts, events around Thanksgiving

Nov. 19, 2024

MILWAUKEE -Thanksgiving Day is right around the corner. Whether you're planning on cooking turkey, stuffing and all the fixings or something a bit simpler, Marquette University experts here to help you make the most of the holiday.

Marquette events

  • There will be no Thanksgiving meal open to media this year.
  • Marquette's tree lighting ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3. An advisory will be shared in advance.

"Kitchen table" economics

Brian Jacobsen, instructor of practice in finance in the College of Business Administration, can discuss the cost of a Thanksgiving dinner, prices of each dish, comparisons to years past, ways to save on the meal and how long it would take to work off the meal in relation to the average wage. Email him at [email protected].

All in moderation

Dr. Marilyn Frenn, professor and interim associate dean for research in the College of Nursing, can offer tips on nutrition when presented with food and treats at the holidays, as well as ways to work off the extra calories from Thanksgiving dinner. Email her at [email protected].

Attitude of gratitude

Rev. Ryan Duns, S.J., assistant professor of theology in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, can discuss the significance of gratitude during Thanksgiving and in everyday life. Email him at [email protected].

Turkey prep

Dr. John Borg, professor of mechanical engineering, can explain what can happen if one does not properly defrost a turkey before frying it. Email him at [email protected].

Black Friday

The busiest shopping day of the year typically starts before we even finish our Thanksgiving meal. Although many families have created traditions around getting up early and waiting in line outside brick-and-mortar stores, Cyber Monday is becoming more popular with the convenience of online shopping at your fingertips.

  • Black Friday vs. Cyber Monday: Dr. Alex Milovic, associate professor of practice in marketing in the College of Business Administration, can talk about how much the in-person Black Friday shopping experience has diminished in favor of Cyber Monday and virtual deals, as well as how more than 2.5 times as many people are shopping online vs. in-person nowadays and other trends in retail. Email him at [email protected].

These experts were also shared in Marquette's monthly briefing of related experts and stories from around campus. If you would like to receive the monthly briefing, contact Kevin Conway at [email protected].
