Walker County has hired historic preservation consulting firm WLA Studio to complete Phase II of the county's comprehensive Historic Resources Survey (HRS). This work is being completed under the direction of Walker County, as well as the Historic Preservation Division of Georgia's Department of Community Affairs. The goal of the survey project is to identify and document properties built before 1986 that are potentially eligible for historic designation. The survey area (shaded in pink) is located in southeastern unincorporated Walker County, falling between State Route 151 and W Armuchee Road.
A survey team will start field work to document properties that fit the established criteria between April 15 and April 17. The survey team will NOT go onto privately owned property during the survey process. WLA Studio team members will be wearing bright yellow/orange safety vests and carrying clipboards and cameras. They will also have a company logo on their vehicle.
The survey team will gather architectural data for inclusion in GNAHRGIS: Georgia's Natural, Archaeological, and Historic Resources Geographic Information System. GNAHRGIS is an interactive online database designed to catalog information about the natural, archaeological, and historic resources of Georgia.
For the duration of the survey, the team will tour survey areas on foot or by vehicle. The survey team will take photographs and collect information from the public right-of-way. The survey team will photograph front and side elevations of each building, and the information collected will focus on each building's architecture, including building type, architectural style, historic details, exterior materials, and other notable features. Significant landscape features will also be recorded if present.
WLA expects to make return visits in May and June, as needed.
