President Mahama in Luanda for 21st AU Extraordinary Session on conflict resolution.

29 August 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, to participate in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), focused on strengthening conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms across the continent.

Scheduled for 30 August 2026, the high-level summit will be led by H.E. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of Angola and the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.

The summit's primary agenda is to consider and adopt a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan, and Implementation Matrix on Conflict Prevention and Resolution for the continent.

The African leaders aim to assess existing continental peace and security frameworks and agree on concrete measures to improve coordination, responsiveness, implementation, and financing of both the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA).

The gathering of heads of state takes place against a backdrop of complex and mounting security challenges across the continent, including Sudan, Eastern DRC, the Sahel Region, the Horn of Africa, and Mozambique.

President Mahama and fellow African heads of state are expected to forge actionable strategies during the session to bolster regional stability and reinforce the continent's collective capacity for peacebuilding.
