How the Strategic Allocation Framework (SAF) Impacts the Future of CIRM’s Research Funding

At the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), our mission is to accelerate world class science to deliver transformative regenerative medicine treatments in an equitable manner to a diverse California and world.

For nearly two decades, CIRM has been at the forefront of the regenerative medicine field, catalyzing significant scientific breakthroughs and developing therapies that have reshaped lives. This journey has been underpinned by our commitment to building infrastructure and enhancing educational initiatives, which have together fostered a robust ecosystem to move the field forward.

As the regenerative medicine field rapidly evolves, CIRM faces a crucial challenge: how to strategically allocate its remaining $3.86 billion to optimize impact across a diverse range of initiatives. Guided by the mandates of Prop 71 (2004) and Prop 14 (2020), we are committed to delivering on the promises made to California voters.

To address this, CIRM has launched the Strategic Allocation Framework (SAF) - an effort to prioritize resources and maximize the potential of regenerative medicine breakthroughs.

What is the SAF?

The SAF is a systematic data-driven approach to help CIRM prioritize how to use our resources most effectively. It guides us in making recommendations to our Board (the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee), ensuring we stay on track with CIRM's strategic goals and effectively make the most impact on the lives of Californians.

Goals Designed for Maximizing Impact

For almost a year, CIRM has built the SAF around impact goals that reflect CIRM's commitment to accelerating the development of treatments, promoting equitable access to therapies, fostering collaboration across the scientific communities and building the future workforce.

Watch our board and subcommittee recordings to learn more about each goal below and associated recommendations.

As CIRM moves forward with the SAF, we invite you to learn more about our new direction. Details about key recommendations are included in CIRM's public posting.

These goals and final recommendations will be discussed at the upcoming Board meeting on September 26, 2024, where the future direction of CIRM's funding will be decided.
