New Fire Engine Goes into Service with Traditional Push-In Ceremony

The Hillsboro Fire & Rescue Department proudly celebrated a new fire engine with a push-in ceremony at Station 2. Firefighters teamed-up to physically push the new engine into the bay - celebrating the beginning of the apparatus' service life to the community.

Push-in ceremonies date back to the 1800s, to the days when fire departments used horse-drawn equipment. When returning from a call firefighters had to unhitch the horses and physically push the wagons back into the station.

The tradition lives on today as a welcome for new apparatus and a symbol of our continued commitment to serve our community with the best tools and technology available in the fire service.

The engine is designed to respond to a range of emergencies including structure fires, motor vehicle crashes and medical related incidents. "The advancements in technology on the new engine greatly improves the safety of our firefighters and our emergency response efficiency for the community," said Captain Steve Chapman.

Engine 2, built by Spartan can pump 1,500 GPM, carry 940 gallons of water and has nearly 2,700 feet of hose capacity, along with an abundance of storage space for tools and medical equipment.

It replaces an aging engine that has served the community for 13 years. With 124,000 miles driven and 9,800 engine hours spent responding to emergency calls the old engine will remain in the fleet as a reserve apparatus.

Now in its new home, Engine 2 and crew are ready to roll out in service of those who live, work and play in Hillsboro. "We're so thankful to have the support of our community to make this possible," added Chapman.
