Cancer Therapies Arrive for Breast Care International in Ghana
A recent shipment of medications from Direct Relief arrived to support Breast Care International, or BCI, for distribution to health facilities across Ghana, strengthening access to care in communities that have long faced significant gaps in essential medicines.
Founded by Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai in 2002, BCI works to expand breast cancer awareness, screening, and treatment across Ghana, where more than 4,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and nearly half will die, most at advanced stages when survival rates are lowest.
The donation includes Teva-donated chemotherapy and adjunctive therapies for women receiving treatment at BCI's Peace and Love Hospitals, as well as consumables and other supplies distributed through BCI's broader network of partner health facilities across the country.
Direct Relief has provided more than $154 million in medical support to Breast Care International since 2014.
Midwife Kits Reach Northern Haiti Amid Ongoing Crisis
Direct Relief has shipped midwife kits to healthcare facilities across Haiti's North, Northeast, and Northwest departments through the Dalton Foundation and its Haiti Health Network, supporting safe deliveries for mothers and newborns in communities facing significant supply chain disruptions.
The Dalton Foundation is an Ohio-based nonprofit that works to expand healthcare access for vulnerable communities. Its Haiti Health Network connects more than 250 healthcare facilities and professionals across all ten of Haiti's departments and serves as a distributor for Direct Relief partners in the region.
Mobile Health Clinic Expands Access to Care in Rural Haiti
With support from Direct Relief, Hope for Haiti recently launched a series of mobile health clinics serving remote communities in the Petit Trou region of Haiti, bringing essential healthcare services directly to residents who often face significant barriers to accessing care.
The first clinic was held in Oso, a mountainous community south of Petit Trou, and marked the beginning of an outreach effort designed to connect patients with healthcare providers from the region's new hospital. Additional clinics were held in Tiby and Lyev, reaching hundreds of community members. Across the first three clinics alone, more than 790 patients received medical care.
Beyond providing direct health services, the mobile clinics are helping establish relationships between local residents and hospital staff, fostering trust and awareness of available healthcare resources.
For many residents, the clinics provide access to care that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. Destine, a single mother of five from the community of Lyev, shared,
"I have no words for how meaningful this is to our community, to have the hospital staff come all the way up the mountain to provide care. We are geographically isolated, but we are not forgotten."
