reSPARC to enter implementation phase of revenue, efficiency initiatives

New structure will accelerate progress to strengthen university's financial future

The University of Iowa is advancing its reSPARC initiative into a new phase focused on implementation, building on nearly a year of cross-campus collaboration to strengthen the university's financial future.

Launched in August 2025 as part of the university's strategic plan, reSPARC (Revenue and Efficiencies Strategic Plan Action and Resource Committee) was designed to identify opportunities to generate new revenue and improve operational efficiency.

Since its launch, nearly 100 faculty, staff, and leaders from more than 35 colleges and units have contributed to the effort. Together, the teams have developed a wide range of ideas and recommendations - from new ways to generate revenue, both inside and outside academics, to changes that cut costs and improve services.

These efforts are already showing results, including energy efficiency, simpler service processes, and less unused technology. Several other high-impact projects are also moving closer to implementation.

"As we look at the work accomplished over the past year, reSPARC has done exactly what it was designed to do. We have brought people together from across the university to identify meaningful opportunities and build a strong foundation for action," says Sara Sanders, reSPARC co-chair and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. "The next phase is about turning that work into measurable outcomes that strengthen our institution for the long term."

Over the summer, reSPARC will shift to a simpler structure aligned with the broader implementation of the university's strategic plan. The current model of 12 teams will evolve into a single reSPARC work group, supported by smaller teams focused on moving specific projects forward.

The new structure will allow decisions to be made more quickly and ensure coordination with other strategic plan priorities as projects move from ideas to action.

Current reSPARC teams will keep working over the next few months to finalize and move forward the recommendations from the first year. Some team members will continue to be involved in implementation, while other work will be folded into strategic plan work groups.

"We are deeply grateful for the time, expertise, and dedication that so many members of our campus community have contributed to this effort," says Kevin Kregel, executive vice president and provost. "That collaboration will remain essential as we move into implementation and continue building a stronger, more sustainable future for the University of Iowa."
