IN THE NEWS: New Treatment for Hemophilia B Brings Hope to Patients

April 17, 2026

FOX 2

Hemophilia B is a rare, benign blood disease that requires routine care. This was a weekly occurrence in Steve W.'s case. He and his wife, Alison, showed FOX 2 how Steve had to self-deliver factor IV into his bloodstream intravenously every Saturday, until he became the first hemophilia B patient at Karmanos to receive a newly FDA-approved, one-time gene therapy. Now, he doesn't have to worry about weekly injections. Indryas Woldie, M.D., hematologist, medical oncologist and member of the Hematology Oncology Multidisciplinary Team, explained this blood disorder. Dr. Woldie also leads the Hemophilia and Other Bleeding Disorders Clinic at Karmanos.
