Creative Greensboro announces 58th season of Drama Programming

Creative Greensboro's 58th season of drama programming, created in collaboration with local theater artists, creative organizations, and community members, will start this October. Season 58 celebrates excellence in comedic theatre through the Greensboro Playwrights Forum, the North Carolina New Play Project, and a wide range of performance opportunities for all ages.

Rooted in partnership with Greensboro's vibrant theatre community, the season reflects a shared commitment to fostering creativity, connection, and storytelling.

"The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales"

October 22-25 | Van Dyke Performance Space inside the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie St.

"The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales" takes on classic storybook fables and uproariously derails them in this adaptation of Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's children's book. Everything from Chicken Little to The Gingerbread Man gets a complete makeover. Fun music and witty narration accompany the likes of ineloquent and inelegant giants, sassy barnyard animals, colossal cow pies and enough stinky cheese to go around. Auditions take place Wednesday, September 2, and Thursday, September 3.

The Dramatist Playground

The Greensboro Playwrights Forum offers a unique opportunity for actors and playwrights to participate in the collaboration of crafting one play in one day. Actors and playwrights work from 10 am to 8 pm to develop, devise, and perform the world's newest plays. The Dramatist Playground has become one of the forum's most exciting and daring programs for both the participants and audience.

"Dear God!" by Katie Cob

Winner of the 2027 North Carolina New Play Project

January 14-17, 2027 | Stephen D Hyers Theatre inside the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie St.

"Dear God!" is a heartfelt coming-of-age comedy centering Beth, a student struggling with what exactly it means to be good. She receives a little divine intervention from two unlikely guardian angels: (alleged) axe-murderess Lizzie Borden and (alleged) mass-disease-spreader Typhoid Mary. What could go wrong? Auditions are November 9-10.

Short Tales for Children

January 30 and 31, 2027 | Van Dyke Performance Space inside the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie St.

An annual collaboration with UNC-Greensboro that brings future theater educators together with young actors to rehearse and perform short plays written by members of the Creative Greensboro Playwrights Forum. Auditions are December 9-10.

"The Comedy of Errors" by William Shakespeare

March 4-7, 2027 | Stephen D. Hyers Theatre inside the Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie St.

Antipholus? Dromio? Is that you? In William Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors," mistaken identity and long-lost twin shenanigans abound. Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse search for the family they've never known has led them all over the world until they landed in Ephesus, where citizens from Syracuse are forbidden. They're closer to their goal than they realize, but the closer they get, the more chaos and confusion there is. Will they finally find their missing puzzle pieces, or will more pieces go missing in the process? Set in early Hollywood at the height of slapstick comedy, "The Comedy of Errors" invites young theatre makers to explore physicality, ensemble work, and all-around silliness. Produced in Collaboration with Shared Radiance Performing Arts. Auditions are January 13-14, 2027.

45th Annual Evening of Short Plays

Always an eclectic evening! Come celebrate 30 years of original playwriting and see Greensboro's newest plays by members of the Creative Greensboro Playwrights Forum. Auditions are February 22-23, 2027.

"Gypsy, a Musical Fable"

Regarded by many theatre professionals as the finest musical ever created, "Gypsy" is the ultimate tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughter's success, while secretly yearning for her own. Set all across America in the 1920s and 30s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurents' landmark show explores the world of two-bit show business with brass, humor, heart and sophistication. The celebrated score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim boasts one hit after another, including "Let Me Entertain You," "Together Wherever We Go," and "Everything's Coming Up Roses." 3rd Annual Sonnet Fest

August 6-8, 2027

Creative Greensboro, in partnership with multiple local theatre companies, will collaborate once again on the wildly popular Sonnet Fest! The event will feature creative performances of Shakespeare's Sonnets. Location to be announced in 2027. Auditions are June 11-12, 2027.
